Kundalini by Gopi Krishna

Gopi Krishna's autobiographical account of his unexpected awakening of Kundalini energy serves as a powerful cautionary tale to anyone whose passing curiosity has been aroused by this mysterious phenomenon. While it shouldn't be presumed that Krishna's tale is representative of most people's Kundalini experiences, it's worth being aware of how powerful this stuff can be, and why it's not a good idea to mess around with it without a good teacher.

Path Notes of an American Ninja Master by Glenn Morris

While it may not immediately seem obvious that a book by a Ninja Master would be of any help to an aspiring Yogi, there are many treasures in this work. Dr. Morris was a martial artist at heart, but the story he relates of his experience of going through (and living with) a full Kundalini awakening is priceless. Many of the meditations and esoteric concepts Morris writes about are very applicable to the Yogic path; this is one book that you shouldn't judge by its cover. It's a lot of fun to read, too!

The Subtle Body by Cyndi Dale

This is an encyclopedia of all things related to subtle anatomy. Chakras, nadis, auras, koshas, vayus - you name it, it's in here. Provides a large collection of cross-cultural correlates to traditional Yogic perspectives - Mayan, Egyptian, Judaic, even Cherokee energy systems are described. We like this book in particular because it's exhaustively referenced and everything is cited. Some of the information here and there (particularly Dale's own "12-chakra System") isn't exactly what we would consider traditional, but as she lists all her sources, it's easy to decide for yourself what is coming from reputable sources, and what you can just as well leave out from your own understanding.

Spiritual guidance

A Path With Heart by Jack Kornfield

Kornfield teaches Buddhist meditation by trade, but it really doesn't matter - this is a simply amazing book. It covers all the many highs and lows of the spiritual path, and it is written with grace, candor, and caring. Great reading for the neophyte and the advanced Yogi alike. Read this book!
